From A for audio description to Z for Z-film

subs works for broadcasting stations, film distributors, DVD studios, film production companies and other clients. We work especially closely with national and international film festivals. In 20 years, subs has successfully completed more than 5,000 projects in 80 languages, something we can be proud of in every respect.

Since 1999, subs has been serving up “original versions with subtitles.” Our clients include international film festivals, high-profile film production companies, distributors, educational institutions and television stations. They all count on the highest quality standards that we can guarantee with our experienced editors.

Post-Production

Professional technical support can be called upon as and when required. In cooperation with our partners, we offer a range of technical solutions and make sure that your subtitles reach you unscathed in the correct format. Our services include:

STL N19

The STL format required by ARTE, for example. There are hundreds of other export options for subtitles files. We can provide (almost) all of them.

DCP

Integrating subtitles into an existing DCP or the creation of a new DCP – encrypted or unencrypted.

ProResHD

Rendering subtitles in a range of formats. For the big screen or YouTube – we’re only limited by the raw material you provide.

HDCamSR

Subtitles in broadcast quality on all formats. Film scanning, editing, color and sound correction, standard and format conversions.

BluRay

Authoring screeners for submission to festivals, but also mastering and bulk production, including DVD/Blu-Ray packaging.

35mm

Something else that crops up in the digital world once in a while: Subtitles needing to be lasered into polyester film material.

Live Subtitling

Electronic subtitling – the drop-in clinic for subtitles With live subtitling, the relevant software and a projector are used to project the pre-prepared subtitles either directly onto the screen or on a surface just below it. This is particularly suited to retrospectives with 35 mm material, as it would be very expensive to make a copy of the 35 mm material which would then need to be laser subtitled. This process does not generally require the creation of any subtitled media, which can be a useful alternative, depending on where and how often the subtitles are to be used. subs will provide the technology and technicians, as well as the pre-created subtitles.

subs – Original Version with Subtitles

subs has been making film subtitles since 1999. With five full-time employees and many freelance translators for almost every language in the world, subs has created subtitles for several thousand feature films and documentaries – all "original versions with subtitles."

Thorsten Birk has been running the company since 2014. He continues the approach established by founders Kirsten Herfel, Jeannette Wolf und Nicole Neumann: the best quality at fair terms. Working with languages means more than the transfer of content from one language to another. It requires precise subject-specific research, a great degree of mindfulness and a feel for the finer nuances of the film. In order to maintain the film’s unique nature, subs works in close collaboration with filmmakers and producers from the very start. Exclusively native speakers take on and manage the language-based tasks. In addition to an excellent feel for language and stylistic confidence, intercultural competence and experience with the medium of film are also among the foundations of our work.
